Title: Blackout
October 24, 2009
Posted by: Anak
Character: Reina Luna Castro
I was named after the moon for a reason. It was because of the perfect crescent moon-shaped birthmark I had on my cheek, just slightly below my right eye. Its appearance made it seem like a tattoo and I couldn't help but wish that it really was one. Why? Simply because that birthmark was like a blemish to me. It was a mark of impurity - something that made me feel horribly unclean.
The moon-shaped birthmark made all the people I came across with think that I was some sort of
psychic. Add that to the fact that my mum worked as a fortune teller and I've practically been permanently branded as a natural expert on clairvoyance . Well, I certainly know a thing or two about the art of fortune-telling, like using tarot cards and reading palm lines. But all those things aside, I believe my true talent comes in how I am able to
read people - how I am able to see
their true colors, no matter how hard they hide them.
My ability enabled me to know exactly how people act and how I should deal with them in return. As far as I can see, almost everyone in this feeble world of ours deceives and lives as a pretender. Only one person has ever been so pure-hearted enough so as to live as she truly is - and that person became my closest friend. She was a person like no other and as her best friend, I took the job of keeping her safe as my responsibility. No one would be able to approach such a pure, innocent girl...
No one. Not while I'm around...
I was walking with her one day when I caught sight of this Japanese boy staring from afar. I immediately saw through his expression - the words "I love you" were written all over his face. He couldn't fool me. He acted as if he was a mere bystander but I knew very well that he was
desperately holding on to his desire to approach my dear friend.
As if I'd let you... That thought came as a force of impulse. Feelings of dislike came over me as I stared at the Japanese boy, who apparently had his eyes solely on my best friend. I kept on thinking about how much I disliked him until I got so dizzy.
It was then that the first Blackout happened. Who knows how it happened but as far as I remember, everything simply went dark and when I opened my eyes again, I was lying on the cold ground in front of the gates of an old Gothic mansion with my clothes tattered and my hands drenched in
blood. At that moment, there was no way I could have known how that happened and how that incident would happen yet again...
soon.
